Easy to Make Sparrow Trap

Details on how to construct and easy-to-make sparrow trap that is lighweight and portable and can be used anywhere around your home and property.

Are you in need of a sparrow trap? If so, you will find that they are very simple to make. You can do so with some items that you may have around your home so the investment is very minimal. This can be a great project for children in the home to assist with too. They can get experience working with tools, bond with an adult, and understand that nature doesn’t have to be harmed in order for humans to find a balance with it.

If you keep pieces of wood from other projects you may already have what you need to make a sparrow trap. You can really use any type of wood but it will be best if it is ½ inch thick or more. Try to avoid using wood that is too heavy though because you will find it is more complicated to work with. You don’t need anything fancy either as even plywood can be a good choice.

Chances are you have a plastic jug around your home that was used for something. Make sure it is rinsed out very well. It doesn’t matter what size over all that it happens to be as you will only need the middle of it. This should be about 5 ¼” to 5 ½” in length. Make sure you cut it evenly all the way across the container.

Once you have cut it, paint it black so that it is very dark. Remember that birds in general will be repelled by anything that is shiny. Once the paint is dry you can screw it in on both sides to a 12” long board. This should be at least ½” thick as well. The other item you will need is an empty film canister. If you only use a digital camera these days you may not have one around.

However, you can go to most film developing studios and ask for one. They usually have quite a few and won’t mind donating one to you. The other option is to buy a very low priced roll of film for a few dollars so you can get one. You are going to need to go to the local hardware store to get a pivoting bracket if you don’t have one at home.

You want to secure the bracket and the film canister at the other end of the wood where you have your plastic piece securely in place. Make sure that there is a teeter totter effect going on with it. That way when a sparrow comes in it will move and that is what secures the bird inside instead of allowing it to go back out.

The last step for making a sparrow trap is putting a front on it with a door. The opening needs to be very small or a sparrow will be too intimidated to go inside of it. Make sure you use a good hinge set up to secure the door. That way you can easily open it up and release the bird when you have moved it to a new location.

Sparrow traps aren’t just easy to make, they really are one of the best ways to get these birds and relocate them from your property. It is best to put them in place when you first start to notice these birds coming around. They can quickly increase in numbers if they feel they have found a location that is a safe haven for them.
